Ethnographic research that has been everywhere from women’s gatherings in fundamentalist communities to meetings with prophets across the intermountain West.

About

In 2013, I read Richard Bushman’s Rough Stone Rolling during my first year of graduate school. I never stopped reading Mormon history.

I hold a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of California, Riverside. My dissertation, “Spirits in Zion,” explored the contemporary practice of spirits communication among minority Mormon groups seeking legitimization through spectral authority.

During my dissertation research, I heard stories about Joseph White Musser, the “father of Mormon fundamentalism.” After acquiring his diaries, I wrote a biography that addresses his life and impact on the broader Mormon movement. It is forthcoming in 2023 with University of Illinois Press. His diaries are currently being edited for publication.
